Life is full of journeys—some expected, some unwanted, all uncertain. We move forward, not always knowing what’s ahead, but hoping for strength to get there. Ezra understood this well. He wasn’t a king or a warrior. He was a scribe, a student of God’s law. Yet God chose him to lead exiles back to Jerusalem, to restore worship, and to teach His people. A massive task.
Ezra had no political power, no army, no wealth to fund the mission. What he did have was far greater—the hand of God upon him. In Ezra 7, this phrase appears three times (vv. 6, 9, 28). It wasn’t just poetic language. It was the reason Ezra’s mission succeeded. The same unseen hand that guided Ezra is at work in our lives today.
The Hand That Opens Doors
Ezra 7:6 says, “The king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the Lord his God upon him.”
Ezra approached King Artaxerxes with a request to return to Jerusalem and teach God’s law. The king agreed. Not only that—he provided resources, authority, and safe passage.
From a human perspective, it might have seemed like the king made the decision. But behind the scenes, God’s hand was moving hearts and aligning circumstances. Ezra asked, and God answered in a way only He could.
God still opens doors today. Opportunities appear, solutions emerge, favor comes from unexpected places—not by our striving, but by His unseen hand.
The Hand That Strengthens
Ezra 7:9 tells us, “On the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.”
The journey from Babylon to Jerusalem wasn’t easy. Four months of travel. Harsh terrain. Potential threats. Yet Ezra and his people arrived safely, strengthened by God’s hand.
Life’s journeys can feel just as overwhelming. The road ahead may be uncertain. Strength may feel in short supply. But the same God who sustained Ezra sustains us. The same unseen hand that guided him through the wilderness leads us through our own.
The Hand That Encourages
Ezra looked around at everything God had done—the favor, the open doors, the journey ahead—and he felt something rise up in him. Strength. Not from his own skill or strategy, but from the hand of the Lord his God upon him (Ezra 7:28).
He didn’t have all the answers. He didn’t need them. He had enough to take the next step, and that was enough.
God’s hand still does the same today. When doubt whispers lies, He speaks truth. He never guarantees an easy road, but He does promise to walk it with us. And that changes everything.
Walking Forward in Faith
Ezra’s story isn’t just history. It’s a picture of how God works today.
• He opens doors that seem locked.
• He provides strength for the long road.
• He encourages when doubt threatens to take over.
God’s unseen hand is at work, whether we recognize it or not. Step forward. Trust Him. His hand is upon you. And that changes everything.
