When a scuba diver is submerged in deep waters, it’s difficult to tell which way is up because the water scatters the light, and he can’t perceive the pull of gravity. He can quickly lose his sense of direction and be overwhelmed with confusion. In his mind, up is down, and down is up, and he won’t know which way to turn. Even worse, if panic controls him, he will place his life in jeopardy.
There is a straightforward rule to guide the disoriented diver — follow his air bubbles. Well trained scuba divers know that no matter which way he thinks is the right direction, the bubbles are always correct. Air bubbles never go sideways. They never go down. They always go up. The diver must ignore his sense of direction and trust his air bubbles to guide him.
It is easy to become perplexed with even the basics of life because so many voices are shouting at us that right is wrong—and wrong is right. Don’t be fooled by the compulsion to conform. When the waters of life are deep, and you have lost all sense of direction, there is a straightforward rule–follow what the Lord says.
Just as the air bubbles are never wrong, the Bible is always correct and will point you in the right direction, even when people may say otherwise. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Prov. 3:5-6).
